72-inch 3D TV by JVC/NICT Revealed: No Dorky Glasses Required!

$name 72-inch 3D TV by JVC/NICT Revealed: No Dorky Glasses Required!

Among the wealth of new tech and gadgets blowing our minds from Ceatec 2008 comes a 72-inch, full 3D television display from a partnership of Japanese companies. The enormous TV set is set to go head-to-head against high-resolution formats by providing a fairly unorthodox entry into the multimedia format wars.Industry giants, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the Victor Company of Japan (JVC) have gotten together to bring a little magic into our television viewing experiences.

The set doesn’t require any old-fashioned 3D glasses but rather brings the experience straight from the screen to your eyeballs. Multiple HD projectors and optimized lighting combine to make this kind of fantastic voodoo possible.

The 72-inch 3D TV conceived by JVC and NICT also has full-HD resolution at 1920×1080. This alone should help to put away some of the fears held by many that new TV formats are becoming a full-fledged format war. Although consumers will need to pick between wanting a 3D or standard experience, the HD resolution on the new television at least brings the new format to a common denominator.

Intended commercial release isn’t planned until 2011 but for now you can read detailed information on the upcoming system here.
