Stephen Hawking Introduces a Clock That Shows Your Mortality
The Corpus Clock debuted at the University of Cambridge last Friday with an introduction by famed cosmologist, Stephen Hawking. At an estimated $1.8 million value, the one-of-a-kind clock features an enormous grasshopper and a mechanized design which ultimately seeks to show much more than the usual twelve hour day display.
An insect atop the clock rotates the gigantic face (which has no design other than spaced, slitted tick-marks and LED lights) and illustrates the advancement of time. The real kicker is that the timepiece shows the minutes, hour and seconds while the grasshopper devours every passing moment. Hawking gave an opening speech at the unveiling which discussed the fleeting nature of time.
John Taylor, a former student of the University designed and built the clock specially for the Corpus Chrisiti College’s library exterior. The college explained that the clock was designed to serve as a perpetual reminder of mortality, combining a powerful, existential piece of art with functionality.
