SlotMusic Gets Major Label Backing

SanDisk, backed by four major record labels, unveiled their new music format, SlotMusic on Monday. SlotMusic will sell entire albums on tiny, MicroSD compact card readable through such devices as cell phones, computers or MP3 players.

With support from international retailers such as Best Buy and WalMart, SlotMusic may actually stand something of a chance of catching on among consumers. The formats compatibility with a wide-range of portable devices is meant to capture some of the market still interested in physical music purchase while CD sales continue to dwindle. While it’s not the same as digital distribution, SlotMusic represents an effort to sell a real product while recognizing a changing, technological consumer base.

EMI, Sony BMG, the Warner Music Group and the Universal Music Group are all planning to support the new format with the imminent release of albums by popular artists (including Rihanna, Weezer, Elvis Presley, Usher and Akon and more) and sell SlotMusic albums for a price between $7-10 USD.
