Nintendo DS2 on its way, hopes to eliminate homebrew scene

$name Nintendo DS2 on its way, hopes to eliminate homebrew scene

Nintendo is set to release an upgrade to the current DS Lite. Will you take the plunge? Not even for dual touch screen functionality?

This may come as a shocker to some of you but the Nintendo DS will see a new, fresher, model out within the next year or so. Let me give you a minute to absorb that - done?

IGN has posted some mocks of what the new DS might look like and what it might incorporate. The specifics are still largely rumor heavy, but news has it could release in April or May 2009 release.

The biggest rumor is how the new DS will sport touch screen functionality on both screens; in addition to widescreen display.

So why is Nintendo pulling the plug on the current gen DS? The only thing this blogger can think of is in the new hardware. With a new motherboard - Nintendo might put on super-duper impenetrable protection against flash carts and mods. This would have an adverse effect on game sales and, for Nintendo, order will be restored.

Well, all the homebrew talk aside, a DS refresh would open up lots of opportunity for developers to create new and original games. No offence to games like Elite Beat Agents or Phoenix Wright, which were amazing by the way, but dual screen and dual touch functionality could bring about a whole new genre of games.

Look for it next year but drool about it today.
