Why Chrono Trigger is such a big deal
Chrono Trigger makes its way onto the DS; so what’s all the hype about?
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last thirteen some odd years - the arrival of Chrono Trigger on the SNES was a very big deal. Not only did it feature extensive depth and backstory to its multiple characters, it also showcased multiple endings depending on the choices the player made through out the course of the game.
Sure, that all seems common place now, but Chrono Trigger was the first game to put all those elements into a solid package will tons of replay value that had gamers coming back for more.
Fast forward to 2008, thirteen years after the its original release; DS owners will be able to get their hands on the Masamume, slay demons of all sorts, travel back in time and save the world from Lavos. That’s right, Chrono Trigger will make its DS debut this winter.
But the real question is, what’s the big deal? The game had its run on the SNES and even had some time on the Playstation, full with new FMV sequences. So why are we playing this game again? Hasn’t SquareEnix milked this cash cow for all its worth? Apparently not and I don’t blame them.
The Chrono series has been heralded for its unmatched story telling ability while mixing in simple combat controls that have lots of depth to them. Depending on the party you have - and there are multiple combinations, gamers will be able to level up different offensive and defensive skills. The multiple endings will have you wanting to read the text instead of mashing the A or Start button to get through them. Trust me, I hate reading as much as you do - but Chrono Trigger’s timeline calls for it. It’s not optional, it’s a necessity.
If you haven’t played the game before - shame on you. If you haven’t beaten it, like me, you should also be pretty disappointed. Hey, I’ve gotten pretty far - but just never got around to finishing it … yeah that’s what I keep telling myself.
The game is tough, there’s no doubt about it. There is the ability to power level, but after awhile you just get tired of beating down the same Imps in the same forest. This game isn’t like other RPG’s where you can hack and slash your way through without healing. You’ll need your revives, you’ll need your healers.
So will I be paying full price for a game that’s thirteen years old and can easily be had on the Playstation for considerably less? Probably. I’m not gonna lie, I will be making the purchase and here’s why:
- I get paid to blog. So by writing this post I’ve essentially already gotten money to buy the game. Isn’t life great?
- I respect that series enough to justify buying it - and not acquiring it by other means. Not that I have those means … I don’t.
- Once it’s in my DS, it won’t be coming out for several months. I mean if that’s not worth 20-30 dollars, I don’t know what is.
- It’s Chrono Trigger for God sake. Did you not read my post?
