NY Times interviews best Guitar Hero player, no one cares
A slow news day for the New York Times gets this tech writer riled up about the future of ‘news’ reporting.
Video games consume lives - they allow players to reenact their favourite scenes from movies, reward them for completing difficult tasks and also give them something to do when all that’s on TV is Hell’s Kitchen. They induce levels of frustration not normally seen, or brought upon, by everyday tasks. Cutting the lawn, washing the dishes, even making your own ice, doesn’t produce the level of anger a video game can and does. If you don’t believe me, check this video clip.
We’ve all been there before - we’ve all fallen in the pits of level 1-1 in the original Mario, we’ve all been blown apart by one of Dr. Wily’s robot crooks, we’ve all fallen victim to that ONE Guitar Hero song we just can’t beat. Video games give us levels of mental pain that could be considered torture in some countries, but we keep coming back for more.
But in the end, they’re just games.
They don’t give you any sense of personal fulfillment - they don’t give you love, happiness or show you gratification. Sure, you get the “Thank you Mario” or the “You Rock” signs but what does it all amount to? In the end, it’s just a lot of wasted time.
Enter Chris Chike.
Dubbed by Guiness World Records as the “Best Guitar Hero player on the planet,” Chris (17), was interviewed by the New York Times for who knows what reason. There are so many other things the Times could have been reporting on - but they decided to interview a regular kid who happens to play Guitar Hero better than anyone else.
I don’t have anything against Chris. I think his responses were very clean and he didn’t let the exposure get to his head. I have something against the Times who believe his accomplishments merit more space in the public sphere. What were they thinking?
Was it such a slow news day that the Times figured, hey lets exploit this 17yr old video game phenom? Pathetic. I’m all for giving attention where it’s due, but Chris’ accomplishments do not warrant this type of display. He knows he’s popular - and by the interview, he hates it. Way to give it to him in spades - idiots.
