$name Capcom takes a shot at piracy, Nintendo claps

Devil May Cry has landed on the PC! The problem is … no one cares.

It looks like the Big N isn’t the only one who has a problem with piracy. An article here shows Capcom’s frustration with the low sales numbers for Devil May Cry 4 for the PC. In the article, Capcom blasts the DMC dev team for not implementing any of the DRM protection used to limit piracy.

Of course, using the DRM protection is a two way street. Capcom and the DMC dev team were supposed to collaborate to find the most effective ways to keep the game from being posted on the net and ripped from the actual DVD. The problem is, both parties neglected that step and Capcom released the PC version of the game without any DRM protection. Smart move Capcom. If you want something right you’ve gotta do it yourself.

What I didn’t know was that the DRM can be so specific as to crash the game whenever it wants. For example, pirates may be able to download, install and execute the game, but the DRM will keep the from running at full capacity. Meaning the game could run for about five minutes and then crash, or run fully but really choppy - destroying the game play experience for the pirate. I guess you learn something new everyday.

What really bugs me, however, is that Capcom is placing DMC’s low sales numbers all on piracy. Hey Capcom, did you ever think that DMC4 just wasn’t any good? Maybe everyone would rather play it on the 360 or PS3? Maybe no one plays action games on PC’s anymore? Get over yourself Capcom. Not everyone knows how, or has the patience, to pirate games. Sure, maybe 100,000 copies of DMC may have been pirated - I just made that number up - but does that really put a dent into the other sales for PS3 and the 360? Oh, those were low too? Well maybe the game was just terrible. (Actually, after looking at the scores, the game received mediocre scores.)

Instead of whining about pirates, how about you come up with an original game instead of emulating the last three Devil May Cry games. We get it, Dante is a bad ass. Stop milking it.
