Facebook Finally Controls Wall Spam

August 26, 2008 · Filed Under Tech News · 1 Comment

The immensely popular social networking site, Facebook has finally started to filter out spam postings on user walls. Even though spam has presented a significant problem for quite some time, it is still quite welcome to have Facebook admins introducing efforts to stamp out the practice. As trojans and worms started cropping up as part of the spam, moderators took notice and got to work on fixing the problem.

Hopefully this will mean an end to walls being covered by ’secret crushes’ and banner ads from companies and help keep Facebook a viable option for social networkers.

DIY Drinking Strawz for When Normal Straws are Too Boring

August 26, 2008 · Filed Under Misc · Comment

ThinkGeek is sick of you drinking out of normal cups or using boring, straight straws. The release of DIY Drinking Strawz takes getting liquid from the glass to your mouth to a whole new level of . . . something. DIY Drinking Strawz break down into dishwasher safe pieces and are available at different costs for different packs (although you probably want to just go for broke and buy the most expensive so you can have a glass of water from the kitchen while in your living room).

These are pretty neat but perhaps a little bit too expensive unless you’re really committed to combining architecture and drinking. The promise of spicing up recreational liquid consumption (or creating a mind-altering drinking game) with friends is probably where the real potential lies with this product and if that’s enough for you then this is probably the only place to buy it..

  • 44 dishwasher safe pieces in all.
  • 20 flexible rubber connectors.
  • 16 translucent straw pieces (12 - 5-inch straws and 12 - 2.875-inch straws).
  • 1-pack: $7.99, 2-pack: $14.99 or 3-pack: 19.99

1.3-Megapixel USB Digital Microscope Lets You Play Scientist

August 22, 2008 · Filed Under Tech Toys · Comment

ThinKGeek is currently featuring a 1.3-megapixel USB digital microscope for real-life work and hobbyist usage alike. The microscope has pretty staggering specs at a consumer price making it a good choice for professionals or those just interested in seeing what their carpet looks like through an 150X zoom.

Although I would have no real use for one I can imagine that the relatively low cost and functionality alone would get many a wannabe scientist drooling. The computer compatibility and digital interface make the microscope an extremely innovative and user-friendly product that’s definitely worth looking into.

  • Handheld-sized, AM-411T model digital microscope with stand (10cm height x 3.2cm diameter, 0.2lb/90g weight).
  • Includes DinoCapture Software (Windows 2000, XP and Vista or Mac 0S9 and OSX)
  • Features 1280×1024 (1.3M) resolution, up to 30fps frame rate, 10 ~ 50X, 200X continuous optical zoom.
  • 8, built-in LED lights with on/off controlled by software.
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • Designed for science education, forensic, printing, textile, industrial inspection, printed circuit board (PCB) inspection, quality control, parts assembly and hobby use.
  • One year warranty
  • $349.99

15-inch Gigantor Digital Photo Frame

August 20, 2008 · Filed Under General · Comment

Gigantor has unveiled their (appropriately named) 15-inch digital photo frame with a size that rivals some laptop monitors. The Gigantor frame is also available in 10.4 and 8-inch sizes (with slightly reduced price points) but that’s just not as fun, is it?

It’s a solid buy for those looking for a large-sized digital photo frame and the built-in video and music options make it a good deal. The technology is still fairly new so price drops over the next few months can be expected but enthusiasts aren’t likely to find a much better deal than this at the moment.

  • Cherry wood frame with 15-inch TFT active matrix LCD screen.
  • JPEG or BMP digital pictures (up to 12-megapixel, 1024×768 resolution) displayed without a computer.
  • Compatible with USB thumbdrive, external USB HDD (FAT32 format) or CompactFlash (CF), Memory Stick (MS), SecureDigital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), Smart Media (SM) and XD memory cards.
  • Integrated speaker for MP3 and video (MPEG-1, 2 or 4) playback.
  • Automatic slide show with transition effects, display times and option for MP3 music in background.
  • IR Remote control and AC adapter (110-240V AC 50/60Hz) included.
  • $219.99
