1877 Praxinoscope

The 1877 Praxinoscope is an authentic working replica of a praxinoscope. What is a praxinoscope? It is an animation device created in 1877 used to depict motion by using a series of rapidly spinning images. Charles-Émile Reynaud a French science teacher invented this device, which is considered the precursor to the motion picture. The way the device works is by placing 12 images into a cylinder, when the brass finial is spun, the images are reflected in the prism of mirrors, which creates the illusion of movement. Comes complete with fourteen image strips.
